Color matching in masterbatch is not just picking a pigment. The real win is reproducing the same target shade across lines, lots and process conditions. Small lab-to-plant gaps can turn into metamerism, shade drift or surface defects.
1. Read the sample under the right light
Customer samples and lab panels should be judged under the same standard illuminants (D65, TL84/F11, A) whenever possible. A match that looks fine under one light can fail in retail or outdoor lighting. Pair visual checks with spectrophotometer readings and clear Delta E targets.
2. Lock the carrier polymer early
Carrier choice (PE, PP, PET and others) drives melt flow, dispersion quality and final mechanical behavior. Starting formulation before the application is clear usually means extra rework on dosage and rheology.

3. Validate dosage against the real line
A lab match at 2% can drift if feeder calibration or blend ratio differs in production. Record real dosage, mixing time and temperature profile during the pilot. Opacity gaps are especially visible in whites and pastels.
4. Keep disciplined lot records
Without pigment lot, carrier lot, process parameters and an approved physical panel, “same color again” requests become guesswork. For repeats, the approved panel plus formula card often beats a digital recipe alone.
5. Reduce risk with a pilot batch
Jumping straight to a large custom lot is expensive risk. A small pilot tests shade approval and process fit together. After approval, keep the same recipe, dosage window and QC checkpoints in bulk production.
